The Cape Jourimain Nature Centre’s museum showcases the area’s rich natural and cultural heritage. As the mainland’s closest point to PEI, the Jourimain Islands were historically known to the Mi’kmaq as their “crossing place.” Featuring an aboriginal canoe and extensive displays, the museum begins with Mi’kmaq origins, follows the Acadian families who settled here, the British re-settlement, and their farming of the dyked saltmarshes. Ice boats from PEI docked here, with guests staying at the Allen Hotel. The fully restored Cape Jourimain Lighthouse was built to guide ferries and fishers. The properties owned by families on the Jourimain Islands were bought out in the 1930s, allowing Nature to gradually reclaim the area. This is the story we share at Jourimain.
